The goal in each level is to infiltrate a medium or large, open world area with the objective of retrieving objects or destroying barriers. It felt very similar to Metal Gear Solid and Deus Ex. The core gameplay is stealth and minimalistic action done right. Still, one sentence in one dialogue box doesn’t change how well Aragami plays out. You’ll understand what I mean when you get there. Not even the dialogue boxes were changed. The ending was satisfying as well to the point where I played the game again completely different, hoping that it would affect the end result. My second playthrough took about three because I knew exactly where to go, where the enemies were, I ignored collectibles, and I had all the power-ups in the game. Speaking of which, Aragami has thirteen chapters and my first time through took about twelve hours. Seriously, it must have been the first three chapters that I realized it. Although it must be noted I saw a certain plot point coming from a literal mile away. It left you to think about things in just the right places. The plot itself is clear and concise but it didn’t reveal everything about the world. They’ll be stories about a great battle, victories and defeats, and other details that gradually build up the lore. In addition, some enemies will provide even more backstory as your skulking about.

She can essentially project herself so she’s by your side and teaches you the mechanics of the game, adds exposition to the story, delivers commentary about the world around you, and basically acts as a non-corporeal companion. You’ve been called upon to rescue a lady from her captors named Yamiko, who is the one responsible for your resurrection. The story starts off with you controlling a summoned and revived spirit, or an Aragami.

The gameplay, the story, the visuals, and the sound are so nicely wrapped up in charm that I scold myself for not being more excited about this title. I’m more or less three playthroughs in and still going back to it so I can complete the game one hundred percent. I'd even love to see Aragami become a franchise.Aragami surprised me in many ways as I wasn’t expecting a stealth game to have such depth. I could easily see Aragami being expanded upon even further to be even better. Some are executed well, and some could use a bit more refinement. Sure, the game doesn't run perfect, the AI isn't always the brightest, and it has some rough spots, but it's an accessible stealth game with a unique approach, and a huge accomplishment from such a small team. But I really enjoyed the cover based one toward the end with the archer. The first one took me a while to figure out. The art style also aided in the enjoyment - as I'm a huge fan of bold art direction and cell shading. In most other stealth games, I feel like the way I want to play is either unencouraged or punished. The sandbox approach give you a lot of options that let you play the way you want to. There were some tough areas, and I died repeatedly, but I really enjoyed the stealth for once. I'm going back now for the Yurei and Kami medals, which are much easier so far. I didn't really touch the Ghost Techniques, favoring the Shinen, Kunai, and Shadow Kills. I went the Oni route, and tried to kill everyone my first playthrough. It's especially satisfying when you can teleport to avoid an incoming light attack and quickly stab the enemy in the back. I felt that from the second I played Path of Shadows, and it's even better here. Teleporting and creating shadows never gets old. Overall, I really love the stealth mechanics here. About the only 'stealthy' games (and I'm using that term loosely) I've enjoyed were Mark of the Ninja, The Last of Us, and Sly Cooper. Most of the time I abandon them after an hour or two.
